The Truth About Baking Soda in Natural Deodorants
If you are new to the natural deodorant world, you have probably done some research and stumbled upon countless of articles explaining the benefits of using baking soda as a natural deodorizer. Baking soda does have some useful properties that makes it popular among natural deodorant enthusiasts. For instance, baking soda is effective at absorbing all types of moisture, including sweat, which makes it useful for keeping your underarms dry. It also effectively kills odor causing bacteria. For these reasons, many natural deodorant brands continue to use baking soda as their main ingredient. However, the truth is baking soda is bad for your skin and can have some serious long-term consequences.
Why is baking soda bad in deodorant?
To understand the negative effects of baking soda on your skin, first you need to understand how your skin works. The top layer of your epidermis is the moisture barrier. It is what keeps your skin moisturized and supple. The moisture barrier is protected what is called the acid mantle. This has a pH level of around 5.5, which makes it slightly acidic. This thin acidic layer not only protects the moisture barrier, but also protects your body from pollution and viral and bacterial infections.
Baking soda is a very alkaline ingredient with a pH level around 8.3. When you use baking soda in a deodorant a chemical reaction occurs between your slightly acidic skin and the very alkaline baking soda. During this reaction, the natural acid mantle and moisture barrier are damaged. Over time this damage leaves your skin more vulnerable to infections, pollution, and sun exposure.
What are the side effects of baking soda in deodorant?
People who switch to a baking soda based natural deodorant often experience a skin irritation or rash in their underarms within the first week of use. Many companies will try to attribute this to “detoxing” or an allergic reaction. Please do not be fooled by these myths! A rash is one of the signs that your deodorant is harming your skin. The longer you use the deodorant, the more damage you are doing. Other symptoms include:
- Dryness
- Inflammation
- Redness
- Breakouts
- Discoloration
- Soreness

I've always had odor problems. I've tried EVERYTHING. When I learned that prbiotics help, and pHresh's deodorant, I bought it immediately. It started working after the first application. I love this scent, very lovely. But overall, I'm blown away by how well it works for me!
This is the first natural deodorant I have tried that actually works. This is my favorite scent they have as well. The cedar-y one smells mostly of eucalyptus and the frangi....whatnot smells very much like a real flower. This cardamom rose is my favorite but I do like to have a little less cardamom. I added a tiiiiiiiiny bit of lavender aroma and it makes it just a tad bit more floral which I like. The cardamom has a bit of a bright, sharpness that I like just a little tamed down. It would be super if there was more rose but I don't have any rose oil to add to it. I would recommend spraying with the nozzle under your shirt because the fumes will choke you.
The Active Sea Mineral Deodorant Stick works really well and has great duration of effect over a few days. The scent is also very very appealing and non-offensive to the senses. This must be due to its natural ingredients because with synthetic and artificial scents, I have allergic reactions in my airway and lungs, but not with this product, and Honestly Phresh's Unscented Prebiotic Deodorant that I’ve also used. For many years I was using straight baking soda due to chemical concerns with standard deodorant products, but that started causing irritation spots with burning itching and weeping. I had to use prescription cortisone to clear them and then they would reoccur every three to six months. So for a few years I was using nothing, but then we had a recommendation for Honestly Fresh, which I tried and now use with no issues at all. Interestingly, another unexpected result from using both Phresh products is that the irritations stopped reoccurring. I am not sure why, but something about the Phresh product ingredients is helping. This has been a huge relief because using the cortisone had its problems with causing systemic fatigue. I am not providing any medical advice here, but just speaking to my own experiences, I am pleasantly surprised and very happy that I gave Honestly Phresh a try; two products with the same results. We will be definitely be continued customers.
