Ingredients to AVOID in your Feminine Hygiene Wash
The feminine hygiene aisle can be overwhelming! With a variety of brands and wide range or personal care products, how do you know what is best for you and your intimate areas? With over $2 billion in sales annual in the United States alone products such as tampons, pads, feminine washes, sprays, powders and personal wipes are never going out of style! However, we are seeing a positive movement in brands and their selection of chemical and toxic free products, it’s about time!
Certain chemicals used in feminine care products can affect women’s health. How do you know which brands and products to shop for? Here’s a list of what to avoid and what to look for in your feminine care products.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)- Most commonly the key ingredient in shampoos, body washes, intimate washes, toothpaste, facial cleansers and much more. SLS can potentially cause irritation to skin, especially “down there”! Play it safe by sticking to feminine washes that use natural surfactants derived from ingredients such as coconut oil, sugar or vegetables.
Soap- Feminine washes can contain soap instead of synthetic surfactants mentioned above. With a low acidic pH, your vagina’s balance can be easily disrupted by the soaps alkaline pH and have a negative effect on the vaginal flora. Soap can also cause the mucosal lining to become dry!
Parabens (the enemy!)- Often found in many beauty products, parabens are preservatives that can cause skin irritations. A general rule of thumb, stay away from parabens!
Phthalates- Also known as Phthalate Esters, is commonly used in as plasticizers during the production of polyvinyl chloride and other plastics.
Perfumes or Synthetic Fragrances- A major irritant in beauty and personal care products! Perfumes or synthetic fragrances can contain hundreds of chemicals, unknown to consumers as it is not required to include details on product packaging and labels. Shop for products that are made with natural fragrances such as florals or citrus.
Keep in mind when you shop for personal care products that is important to do your research and read the labels. Stay away from the standout ingredients mentioned above and opt for buzz words such as organic, natural and clean.

This deodorant is the best. It doesnt cake on, perfume and color free. Keeps out bacteria even after a sweaty workout.
I've always had odor problems. I've tried EVERYTHING. When I learned that prbiotics help, and pHresh's deodorant, I bought it immediately. It started working after the first application. I love this scent, very lovely. But overall, I'm blown away by how well it works for me!
This is the first natural deodorant I have tried that actually works. This is my favorite scent they have as well. The cedar-y one smells mostly of eucalyptus and the frangi....whatnot smells very much like a real flower. This cardamom rose is my favorite but I do like to have a little less cardamom. I added a tiiiiiiiiny bit of lavender aroma and it makes it just a tad bit more floral which I like. The cardamom has a bit of a bright, sharpness that I like just a little tamed down. It would be super if there was more rose but I don't have any rose oil to add to it. I would recommend spraying with the nozzle under your shirt because the fumes will choke you.
The Active Sea Mineral Deodorant Stick works really well and has great duration of effect over a few days. The scent is also very very appealing and non-offensive to the senses. This must be due to its natural ingredients because with synthetic and artificial scents, I have allergic reactions in my airway and lungs, but not with this product, and Honestly Phresh's Unscented Prebiotic Deodorant that I’ve also used. For many years I was using straight baking soda due to chemical concerns with standard deodorant products, but that started causing irritation spots with burning itching and weeping. I had to use prescription cortisone to clear them and then they would reoccur every three to six months. So for a few years I was using nothing, but then we had a recommendation for Honestly Fresh, which I tried and now use with no issues at all. Interestingly, another unexpected result from using both Phresh products is that the irritations stopped reoccurring. I am not sure why, but something about the Phresh product ingredients is helping. This has been a huge relief because using the cortisone had its problems with causing systemic fatigue. I am not providing any medical advice here, but just speaking to my own experiences, I am pleasantly surprised and very happy that I gave Honestly Phresh a try; two products with the same results. We will be definitely be continued customers.
