What is the Difference Between Deodorant and Antiperspirant?
June 10, 2014 admin

A common misconception is that deodorant and antiperspirant are one in the same. However, these products couldn’t be more different. It is important to note these differences in order to determine which one is best for you and your family. Let’s take a look at each of these products individually.

What is an antiperspirant?

Many people are unaware that the FDA classifies antiperspirants as a drug. Antiperspirants use chemicals, such as aluminum, to alter the body’s natural functions.

How does an antiperspirant work?

When an antiperspirant is absorbed by the body, it causes the cells in the sweat glands to swell until the ducts are closed shut. This temporarily prevents the release of sweat. However, sweat is a natural process of the body that helps remove toxins from the body. By preventing the release of sweat, antiperspirants trap those toxins inside the body.

What many people who use an antiperspirant don’t realize is that sweat itself is odorless. In fact, sweat only causes odor when it is combined with bacteria on the skin. Since sweat itself doesn’t create an odor, it is important to know about other odor-protecting options, such as natural deodorants. These natural deodorants do not have risk factors that come with the use of antiperspirants.

Risks of using an antiperspirant

Aluminum is one of the common ingredients in antiperspirants. Aluminum is a neurotoxin that can affect the central nervous system. The body is ineffective at removing aluminum, which can result in a build up over time. This build-up can lead to breast cancer, Alzheimer’s Disease, bone disease, and kidney problems.

What is a deodorant?

Deodorants use chemicals or natural ingredients to mask or eliminate bodily odors.

How does deodorant work?

Deodorants fight odor-causing bacteria, allowing your body to sweat naturally. Many regular deodorants use a chemical called triclosan which increases the salt level on your skin, making it uninhabitable for bacteria. Though deodorants won’t keep you dry, they keep the bad smells at bay!

Benefits of using a natural deodorant

Natural deodorants are able to provide effective odor protection without the use of harsh chemicals that are found in regular deodorants. Natural prebiotic deodorants use all-natural ingredients that promote the growth of healthy bacteria on your skin while attacking odor-causing bacteria. It’s important to keep in mind that not all natural deodorants are created equally. Some deodorants are natural, but still use harmful ingredients such as baking soda. Baking soda strips the natural pH of your skin, which can lead to irritation.

Honestly pHresh’s all-natural prebiotic deodorants are baking soda free! They are also vegan, non-gmo and free from aluminum, parabens, phthalates, and other harmful ingredients. Our natural deodorant formula uses a combination of prebiotics, minerals and essential oils to provide 24 hour odor protection without irritation. I think I will buy a prebiotic deodorant from a good shop because it uses natural ingredients. Thanks for letting me know that it still allows me to sweat naturally without having an unpleasant odor. Since natural deodorants have the same effect as regular deodorants, I’m sure that this is a better choice for me.
